Product overview

Apricus ETC range of evacuated tube solar collectors are suitable for both residential and commercial applications.  ETC is the update version of AP collector. The design of the AP solar collector is a culmination of nearly 10 years of feedback from installers and solar professional all over the world and aims to meet their requirements with the following

 

Evacuated Tube Efficiency

The vacuum space in the evacuated tube greatly reduces heat loss.  This greatly increases the conversion efficiency at higher water temperatures or when the outside temperature is very cold.

 

 

 

Passive Tracking

The round absorber surface of the evacuated tubes passively track the sun throughout the day, so no mechanical tracking device is required. This allows maximum surface area exposure from 7am to 5pm which covers the majority of the solar radiation each day.  The end result is on average around 60% of the total available daily light from sunrise to sunset can be converted into usage heat.

 

 

 

 

 

Evacuated Tube and Heat Pipe

The Apricus evacuated tube and heat pipe are assembled differently to any other product on the market. Rather than a centrally located heat pipe with heat transfer fins radiating out to the glass wall, the heat pipe is positioned directly against the glass wall, where the sun is striking. The aluminum heat transfer fins are tightly held against the top inner wall of the evacuated tube as well as the heat pipe with a set of specially designed clips.  This is an important design feature as over time with the high temperature, Aluminum will soften, and so the clips ensure long term tight contact, which is essentially for optimal performance.

Construction

 

The ETC solar collector is comprised of four main parts:

 

Manifold & Header Pipe
Insulated box housing the copper header pipe (heat exchanger) that the system fluid circulates through.
The header pipe is designed for both efficient heat transfer and reliability with only 4 brazing points. Brazing is 45% silver material for optimal strength and corrosion resistance.
The header pipe drains effectively making it compatible with steam-back and drain-back
systems.
A thick layer of glass wool made from recycled glass insulates the header pipe to reduce heat loss and is able to withstand high temperatures.
Evacuated Tube (ET)
Evacuated tubes are made from two glass tubes that are fused at the top and the bottom. The space between the tubes is evacuated to form an insulating vacuum. The inner tube is coated with a special absorber material which absorbs 95% of sunlight, converting it into usable heat.
The contoured aluminium heat transfer fin holds the heat pipe close to the inner glass wall enhancing heat transfer.
Heat Pipe (HP)
The copper heat pipe absorbs heat from the glass wall and the heat transfer fin.
A small amount of water inside the heat pipe turns to steam at only 30oC rapidly transferring heat up to the header pipe. Liquid circulates through the header pipe carrying away the heat.
Mounting Frame
Frame components are made from high tensile and corrosion resistant anodized aluminium, with marine grade 316 stainless steel fasteners. The aluminium frame extrusions are designed to withstand extreme wind and snow loading with only 2 mounting rails, greatly speeding up the installation process.
A range of components are available to mount on almost any roof type and at various angles.

 

 

How the system works?

 

Step 1:  The absorber coating on the inner glass tube absorbs sunlight and converts it into heat. 

Step 2:  Steam forms inside heat pipe which transfers heat rapidly up to the manifold. 

Step 3:  A pump circulates water or heat transfer fluid through the header pipe, carrying heat back to the storage tank.  Gradually throughout the day the tank is heated up.

The tank can be boosted by an electric element, gas/oil boiler, or the solar tank can simply feed an existing water heater tank with solar pre-heated water.
